This Privacy Notice explains how Ulster University (University) collects, uses and processes participants’ personal data as a data controller and explains individuals’ rights in relation to the personal data that the University processes as part of its Local Policy Innovation Partnership, EPIC Futures NI.
The University actively seeks to preserve the privacy rights of those individuals that share information with the University. The personal data which you provide to the University will be processed in accordance with UK data protection legislation, specifically UK GDPR and the Data Protection Act 2018.
What is the purpose and legal basis of the processing?
EPIC Futures NI is a Local Policy Innovation Partnership (LPIP) led by Ulster University and funded by the Economic and Social Research Council (ESRC), Arts and Humanities Research Council (AHRC), Innovate UK and UK Research and Innovation (UKRI). EPIC Futures is dedicated to creating a prosperous and sustainable future for Northern Ireland. With a 'place-based' focus, the partnership brings together academia, policymakers, business, community and voluntary sectors to tackle challenges unique to place. Together, we aim to create evidence-based solutions to fair and inclusive employment across Northern Ireland.
The following lawful bases apply to this processing:
- UK GDPR Article 6.1(a) – Consent has been given to the processing of personal data for specific purposes.
- UK GDPR Article 6.1(b) – Processing is necessary for a contract or steps requested by the individual prior to entering into a contract.
- UK GDPR Article 6.1(c) – Processing is necessary for compliance with the law (not including contractual obligations).
- UK GDPR Article 6.1(e) – Processing is necessary for the performance of a task carried out in the public interest or in the exercise of official authority.

How the University collects your personal data
EPIC Futures NI, Local Policy Innovation Partnership, led by Ulster University, shall collect personal data from you directly for the following purposes:
- Service provision: To provide and manage the services, events, and resources offered by EPIC Futures NI.
- Communication: To send updates, newsletters, and event information through various channels, including print, email, phone, and social media.
- Research and analysis: To improve services, understand user needs, and conduct research in collaboration with partners.
- Legal compliance: To comply with legal obligations and respond to lawful requests by public authorities.
Change of Purpose
The University will only use your personal data for the purpose for which it was collected unless the University reasonably considers that another use is compatible with the original purpose. If required, the University will notify you and explain the legal basis for this use.
How long does the University hold your personal data?
